The big question is how much caffeine is too much for you or safe for you daily? For the majority of healthy adults, 400 mg of caffeine per day seems to be safe. As a result, it’s imperative to kick the habit of drinking too much coffee. The negative effects or side effects of caffeine include insomnia, jitters, restlessness, nausea, faster heartbeats, and other symptoms such as caffeine related anxiety and shortness of breath. Greater dosages may result in chest pain, anxiety, and headaches. It can sometimes cause irregular heartbeat and even death.

Caffeine may be safe to use during pregnancy and breast-feeding if it is consumed in amounts normally found in meals. Up to 300 mg of caffeine per day appears to be safe in pregnancy. This equates to roughly three glasses of coffee. Increased consumption during breast-feeding or pregnancy carries a possible risk. Caffeine usage may increase the risk of miscarriage and other problems. Caffeine can also pass into breast milk. High coffee consumption during nursing may cause sleeping problems, agitation, and increased bowel activity in breastfed infants. Women who are or who are attempting to get pregnant should talk to their doctors about limiting their daily caffeine intake to no more than 200 mg.
